What to Include on a Graduate Resume
If you’ve just graduated from university then you’ll probably be glued to your computer screen searching for jobs. But before you write a resume, take a look at our checklist to ensure you’re including all of the relevant information…
If you have just graduated and have your grades then you should definitely include these, along with any other relevant qualifications, in the education section of your resume. List your most recent grade, the institution where you studied and the name of the qualification you achieved. You should also include past education and any other qualifications you have gained that you feel may be beneficial to your job application. If you have yet to receive your grade from university you should list the subject studied and your predicted grade based on your previous years.
Prospective employers will want to see that you have the relevant experience to succeed in the job. Although your qualifications will play a large part in your job application, you need to try and make your resume stand out from others applying to the role. One way to do this is to show your work experience and industry knowledge. Although you have been studying at university and therefore may have little working experience in the industry, you should mention any work experience placements you have completed and any internships you have completed. List down the length of time you worked for, your job role and the key responsibilities. You can also include any projects you have worked on at university which you feel the employer would be interested in. Whether you have contributed to the university newspaper or helped out in the student shop, list down your working experience.
Examples of Work
Include any examples of work throughout your resume and cover letter which you feel would add weight to your job application. Whether it’s highlighting some key projects you have been involved with or including details of your previous work placements, ensure you give the employer something tangible to work with. By including parts of your career portfolio on your resume an employer is able to visualise what kind of impact you could have on their organisation.
References are crucial on your resume as they can help you to support your experience and education and can also instil confidence in your prospective employer. If you have worked within an internship or work experience placement, consider approaching your employer to include as a reference on your resume. If you have yet to gain much work experience then you should ask some of your lecturers if they would feature on your resume as a reference. Including these on your resume will help your resume stand out from others applying for the job and it also gives your prospective employer a chance to find out more about you as a candidate.
